Terms of Service for Edinburgh Money Sense
Effective: 1st December 2023
1. About These Terms (The Boring but Important Bit)
Hello there! These Terms of Service explain how things work when you use our services at Edinburgh Money Sense. Think of them as the ground rules for our courses and website. We know legal stuff can be a bit of a yawn, but it's important we're all on the same page. By hopping onto our website or signing up for any of our practical financial courses (whether it's about investments, taxes, or your pension), you're agreeing to stick by these terms. If you don't agree with them, then our courses probably aren't for you, and that's fair enough.
When we say "we," "us," or "our," we mean Edinburgh Money Sense, a business based right here in Edinburgh, UK, at 101 Princess Street, EH2 3AA. When we say "you," we mean you, our brilliant student or visitor, looking to get a better grip on your money.
2. What We Actually Do Here
Edinburgh Money Sense is all about giving everyday people in the UK a proper, no-nonsense education in personal finance. We run practical courses and workshops that help you understand things like working with investment tools, sorting out your taxes (especially UK tax rules), and making sense of your pension savings. Our aim is to cut through the jargon and teach you real skills you can use. You can find all the details about our courses – what they cover, when they run, and how much they cost – on our website. We're here to educate, plain and simple.
It's really important to remember that we offer educational services. We're not financial advisors. That means we don't give you specific, personal financial advice, recommendations, or sell financial products. The information you get from us is for learning purposes only. It's up to you to decide how to use that knowledge and whether to get advice from a qualified financial professional for your own specific situation. We just give you the tools and the know-how to make smarter decisions for yourself.
3. Your Part of the Bargain
When you join us at Edinburgh Money Sense, we expect a few simple things from you. It's only fair, isn't it?
- Be Honest: Please make sure all the information you give us when signing up is true and up-to-date. This includes your name, email, and payment details.
- Pay on Time: Our courses have a fee, and we expect that to be paid when agreed. Details will be on your booking confirmation. If there's a problem, just give us a shout on +44 131 496 0773.
- Be Respectful: We want our courses, whether in person or online, to be a good experience for everyone. That means being respectful to our trainers and other students. No disruptive behaviour, please. We're all here to learn.
- Personal Use Only: The course materials and everything we teach are for your personal use and learning. Please don't copy them, share them with others who haven't paid, or use them for commercial purposes. That's just not fair on us.
- Age: You need to be at least 18 years old to sign up for our courses and services. This is a legal thing for making contracts in the UK.
- Don't Break the Law: Use our website and services lawfully. Don't try to mess with our website or do anything that goes against UK law.
If you don't stick to these rules, we might have to stop your access to our courses or services. Nobody wants that, so let's keep it simple and friendly.
4. Our Stuff (Copyright & All That)
Everything you see on our website and everything we give you in our courses – the notes, the slides, the exercises, even the way we explain things – belongs to Edinburgh Money Sense. It's our 'intellectual property', as the fancy lawyers say. This means you can't just copy it, share it on the internet, or use it to run your own financial courses without our express permission. You're welcome to use it for your own learning, of course, that's what it's for! But please respect that it's our hard work. We put a lot of effort into making our content clear and useful for people in Edinburgh and the wider UK, so we need to protect it.
5. When Things Go Wrong (Our Responsibilities)
We work really hard to make sure our courses are accurate, helpful, and up-to-date, especially when it comes to UK-specific financial topics like ISAs, tax codes, and pension rules. However, even with the best intentions, we can't promise that everything will always be perfect, or that our educational content will directly lead to a specific financial outcome for you. Remember, we provide education, not personal financial advice.
Because of this, Edinburgh Money Sense can't be held responsible for any losses you might suffer if you act solely on the general information you learned in our courses without getting proper professional advice for your own situation. For example, if you make an investment decision after our course and it doesn't work out, that's your responsibility, not ours. Similarly, while we help you understand tax rules, we're not responsible for any tax penalties you might incur. Always get advice from a qualified financial advisor or tax specialist for your personal circumstances.
We're also not responsible for things completely outside our control, like your internet failing during an online course or major disruptions. Our liability to you will always be limited to the amount you paid us for the specific course or service in question, unless UK law says otherwise. We don't exclude or limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, because that would be illegal in the UK.
6. When Things End
Sometimes, we might need to stop providing you with our services. We can do this if you break any of these terms and conditions, especially if it's something serious like not paying for a course or misusing our materials. We'd usually try to sort it out with you first, but if things don't improve, we might have to terminate your access. If this happens due to you breaking the rules, you might not get a refund for any courses you've already paid for.
On your side, you can stop using our services anytime you like. If you've booked a course and need to cancel, please check our separate cancellation policy (usually available on our booking page) as specific rules and refund possibilities apply, depending on how much notice you give. Just dropping us an email at [email protected] is usually the best way to let us know.
Even if our agreement ends, some of these terms will still apply. For example, the bits about intellectual property and our limitations of liability stick around.
7. The Law That Applies
Since Edinburgh Money Sense is a proud Scottish business, these terms and any disagreements you might have with us will be governed by Scottish law. This means that if there's ever a legal spat (which we really hope there won't be!), the courts in Scotland will be the ones to sort it out. We believe in being fair and open, and we'd always prefer to resolve any issues directly and informally with you first, perhaps over a cup of tea. But if it does come to legal action, Scottish law is the boss.
Thanks for taking the time to read through these. We look forward to helping you get smarter with your money!
